Nigerian environmental scientist Muhammad Isa Abdurrahman has received international acclaim for his groundbreaking review paper on stubble burning, published in the renowned Elsevier journal Environmental Advances.
The 2020 study ranks among the journal’s top three most-cited papers, with over 200 citations to date.
In a statement, Abdurrahman said his paper, titled “Stubble Burning: Effects on Health & Environment, Regulations, and Management Practices,” has significantly influenced environmental policy and research worldwide.
The study provides a detailed analysis of the severe health and ecological impacts of crop residue burning, a practice common in South Asia.
According to Abdurrahman, his work has informed major policy discussions, including the United Nations’ Sand and Sustainability report, the UK Government’s UK–India Free Trade Agreement strategy, and research by the Centre for Global Development.
“It’s deeply rewarding to know my work has shaped policy discussions and program design,” he said.
Currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Georgia, Abdurrahman noted that his research offers practical strategies for governments and environmental agencies to reduce air pollution and adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
Experts have praised the study for bridging science and policy, with its insights proving valuable to institutions like the Energy and Resources Institute and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute.
The paper’s relevance extends to Nigeria, where agricultural residue burning and open waste fires remain major environmental challenges.
Abdurrahman’s recommendations could help Nigerian regulators shift toward proactive residue management and improve both environmental and agricultural outcomes.
His achievement reinforces Nigeria’s growing presence in global scientific research and positions Abdurrahman as one of the country’s most impactful young environmental scholars.
