Nigeria’s first female fighter pilot wins top military honours in Ghana

Flight Lieutenant Kafayat Sanni, Nigeria’s trailblazing first female fighter pilot, has added another milestone to her career by clinching top awards at the prestigious Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) in Accra.

Sanni was honoured as the Best Allied Student and also received the Best Assistant Commandant Paper award during the college’s graduation ceremony on Friday, attended by senior military officials and dignitaries from across Africa.

The achievement was announced in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

Sanni first made headlines in 2019 when she became the Nigerian Air Force’s first female fighter pilot, following her graduation from flight training in the United States. Since then, she has flown combat aircraft such as the Alpha Jet and trained younger pilots using the Super Mushshak aircraft.

Ejodame noted that her latest recognition not only highlights her personal excellence and resilience but also reinforces Nigeria’s growing leadership role in regional defence and gender inclusion within the military.

“This remarkable feat reflects the Nigerian Air Force’s continued investment in talent development under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar,” the statement read.
