Nigeria’s insecurity predates Tinubu’s administration — Dogara

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said Nigeria’s security challenges were entrenched long before President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, arguing that terrorism, insurgency and banditry did not begin under the current administration.

Dogara said the country’s insecurity was rooted in years of porous borders, illegal arms proliferation, youth unemployment and the spread of extremist ideologies.

He spoke at the 16th convocation ceremony of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, where 836 graduands received various academic qualifications.

“Insecurity in Nigeria did not begin with this administration. This is no excuse, because the facts need no defence. Terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and communal violence did not arrive in 2023,” he said.

The university’s Chancellor added that the security challenges had developed over several years, with roots predating Tinubu’s assumption of office.

He, however, noted that the President had consistently identified national security as a major responsibility of his administration.

Dogara also congratulated the graduands, saying Nigeria needed their talents, creativity and innovation to address its challenges and advance national development.

In his address, the Pro-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bode Ayorinde, acknowledged the expansion of access to tertiary education in Nigeria but expressed concern about employment and other opportunities available to graduates after leaving school.

Ayorinde cited National Universities Commission figures showing that Nigeria had 312 universities as of June 2026, comprising 77 federal, 67 state-owned and 168 private institutions.

He said the institutions represented substantial investment in human capital by parents, governments and lecturers, but questioned the prospects awaiting graduates after completing their studies.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Omolola Irinoye, said the university remained committed to providing quality education that combines intellectual development, practical skills, character building and social responsibility.
