The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against a widely circulated online flyer claiming that a free portal has been opened for National Identification Number (NIN) data correction, describing the information as false.
In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the commission urged the public to disregard the link contained in the flyer and avoid using it for any data modification.
According to NIMC, all NIN data corrections must be carried out exclusively through its official self-service platform, warning that any other portal is not authorised.
The fake flyer, which has gained traction across social media, falsely claimed that the Federal Government of Nigeria had directed the commission to launch a free correction exercise in response to widespread complaints.
It listed several services, including name, gender, and date of birth corrections, and directed users to a suspicious “gvly.xyz” website—an unofficial domain not linked to any government agency.
The commission noted that the flyer bore its logo and that of the Federal Government, a tactic often used by scammers to mislead unsuspecting citizens. It added that the image had been clearly marked “FAKE” as part of its effort to debunk the misinformation.
NIMC reiterated that all legitimate NIN data modification services are only available through its approved channels and advised Nigerians to remain vigilant against fraudulent schemes online.
