NiMet forecasts 3-day dust haze, thunderstorms nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted dust haze and thunderstorms across the country from Thursday to Saturday, January 24, 2026.

NiMet, in its weather outlook released on Wednesday, January 21, envisaged slight dust haze in parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Yelwa, Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, and Gombe States on Thursday.

It anticipated Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, and Taraba States to be under sunny and hazy skies on Thursday.

The agency stated: “For central region, sunny and hazy skies are anticipated over the region throughout the forecast period; while slight dust haze is anticipated over parts of Nasarawa and Plateau States.

“For southern region, sunny skies with a few patches of cloud are anticipated with prospects of morning thunderstorms with light rains in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa States.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rains are anticipated over parts of Bayelsa, Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ondo, Abia, Imo, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.”

NiMet forecast sunny and hazy skies in the northern region on Friday.

NiMet also forecast sunny and hazy skies in the North-Central region.

The agency envisaged sunny skies with a few patches of cloud in the southern region with chances of afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rains in parts of Bayelsa, Cross River, Imo, Abia, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States.

NiMet predicted sunny and hazy skies in the northern region on Saturday.

It forecast sunny and hazy skies in the North-Central region.

According to the agency, sunny skies with a few patches of cloud are anticipated in the southern region with chances of ‎afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rains in parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

It added: “Dust particles are in suspension; the public should take necessary precaution.

“People with asthmatic health condition and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather condition.

“Driving under rain should be with caution, while airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.”
