NiMet forecasts 3-day rain, thunderstorms across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast rainfall and thunderstorms across the country from Thursday to Saturday, July 11, 2026, urging residents to take necessary precautions against severe weather.

NiMet, in its weather outlook released on Wednesday, predicted patches of cloud in the northern region on Thursday, with prospects of morning thunderstorms accompanied by light rain in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba states.

Later in the day, the agency said moderate thunderstorms are expected across parts of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno, and Taraba States.

For the North-Central region, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms with light rainfall across parts of the zone, followed by moderate thunderstorms later in the day in Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa States, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In the South, the agency predicted cloudy conditions with chances of morning rainfall in parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, and Ekiti States, while moderate rainfall is expected across most parts of the region later in the day.

On Friday, NiMet forecast patches of cloud in the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rain likely in parts of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa States.

Moderate thunderstorms are expected later in the day in parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

The North Central region is expected to experience sunny skies with patches of cloud, alongside early morning thunderstorms with light rainfall over parts of the FCT, Benue, Niger, Kwara, and Kogi States.

Moderate thunderstorms are forecast across the region during the afternoon and evening.

For the southern states, NiMet predicted early morning light rain, with moderate rainfall later in the day in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Edo States.

On Saturday, the agency forecast partly cloudy skies in the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall expected in parts of Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Taraba, and Kaduna States.

Moderate thunderstorms are also expected later in the day over Taraba, Kaduna, and Adamawa States.

The North-Central region is expected to witness sunny intervals with patches of cloud, while parts of Benue State may experience light morning thunderstorms.

Moderate thunderstorms are forecast later in the day over the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Kogi States.

In the South, NiMet predicted cloudy conditions with light rainfall in parts of Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States in the morning, followed by moderate rainfall across most parts of the region later in the day.

The agency warned that strong winds could precede rainfall in areas likely to experience thunderstorms and advised members of the public to take adequate precautions.

It urged residents to secure loose objects to prevent damage, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets during storms, and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches.

NiMet also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency to support safe and efficient flight operations.
