The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and widespread rainfall across various parts of the country from Saturday, June 14, to Monday, June 16, 2025.
In its weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja, NiMet predicted early morning thunderstorms on Saturday in northern states such as Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa.
Thunderstorms and rain are also expected later in the day in parts of Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.
For the North-Central region, early morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa, while the afternoon and evening are expected to bring more rain to FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau.
NiMet forecasts 3-day rains, thunderstorms across Nigeria
In the South, a cloudy morning is expected, with rain likely in parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa.
Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are forecast in Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers.
On Sunday, NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms in Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba, with later thunderstorms and rain extending to Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi.
North-Central states including Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT are expected to experience early morning thunderstorms, followed by more rain in the afternoon.
The South will likely experience morning rains in Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, with widespread thunderstorms later in the day.
By Monday, northern states including Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba are expected to see morning thunderstorms, followed by rain and storms in Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Gombe, Kaduna, and Bauchi in the afternoon.
In the North-Central region, cloudy skies and sunshine intervals will dominate, with thunderstorms forecast for parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and Niger. Afternoon rains are expected in Kwara, Plateau, and Kogi.
Southern states such as Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and Bayelsa will experience morning rains, followed by isolated thunderstorms across most of the region in the afternoon.
NiMet advised the public to take necessary precautions, warning that strong winds may accompany thunderstorms, potentially causing hazards.
The agency urged people to secure loose items, avoid sheltering under trees, and unplug electrical devices during storms.
Airline operators were also advised to obtain specific weather information from NiMet to enhance flight safety.
