NLC demands list of beneficiaries of N330bn cash transfer

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to publish the names of beneficiaries of the N330 billion reportedly disbursed under its cash transfer programme for poor Nigerians.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, NLC Acting General Secretary, Comrade Benson Upah, questioned the transparency of the initiative managed by the National Social Safety-net Coordinating Office (NASSCO). He said government claims of lifting millions out of poverty must be backed by verifiable evidence.

“For the sake of accountability, Nigerians deserve proof of these disbursements,” Upah stated.

“When you say you have lifted millions, where are they? Where are the people who received the funds? They should publish the recipients.”

He criticised what he described as “banditry with statistics,” accusing the government of releasing large poverty-alleviation figures without substantiation.

According to him, publishing the list would help restore public confidence in the anti-poverty drive, which many citizens feel has done little to ease the impact of inflation and rising living costs.
