NNPP confident of retaining Kano in 2027 — Chairman

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ajuji Ahmed, says the party remains strong ahead of the 2027 general elections and is confident of holding onto Kano State despite recent defections by some of its lawmakers.

Ahmed said the exit of key members, including House of Representatives lawmakers Abdulmumin Jibrin and Sagir Koki — who both defected to the APC citing unresolved internal crises in the Kano chapter — will not affect the NNPP’s electoral prospects. The two lawmakers formally announced their defection in separate letters read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on Thursday.

Their departure follows earlier defections of Kabiru Usman and Abdullahi Sani, also from Kano, who left the NNPP for the APC in May 2025. The party has continued to lose members in Kano and Jigawa since then.

Despite this, Ahmed insists the NNPP is unshaken.

Noted that the party has recorded an influx of new members, particularly in Kano, after the lawmakers’ exit.

“I have just two words for them: good luck. Their exit isn’t a minus to my party. It may even be a blessing, because a lot more people are joining us, especially in Kano,” he said.

Ahmed expressed confidence that the NNPP would “comfortably” retain Kano in 2027 and was targeting additional northern states.

“We are aiming at Jigawa, Kaduna, and a few other states if we are going alone. But if we enter a coalition, we will win even more,” he stated.

He also claimed the NNPP won Taraba State in the last election but was “robbed,” saying this shows the party’s growing strength and its prospects for expanding its footprint in the next general elections.
