The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has clarified that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s move to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a personal decision alongside his Kwankwasiya Movement, not that of the NNPP.
In a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, the party’s National Secretary, Dr. Ogini Olaposi, said Kwankwaso’s declaration confirmed that he and his group were no longer part of the NNPP.
“At last, we have been vindicated. Any negotiations with Kwankwaso should be on his individual capacity.
“The NNPP has nothing against the ruling party, but any decision to form an alliance will be taken collectively by our members,” Olaposi stated.
He noted that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiya Movement ended after the 2023 elections, alleging that the group attempted to hijack the party rather than disengage peacefully.
Olaposi added that many of Kwankwaso’s associates in Kano had already defected to the APC, stressing that the former governor no longer has a political platform.
“Kwankwaso’s political value has diminished after betraying the NNPP, which gave him a free platform for his presidential ambition.
“Any negotiation in the name of the NNPP is null and void, as those expelled remain outside our fold,” he said.
The NNPP secretary also expressed concern over what he described as delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in updating the party’s new executive list, following a court-ordered convention that produced the Dr. Agbo Major-led leadership.
