Troops of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Jubilee have apprehended nine individuals accused of engaging in illegal maritime activities under the guise of a group known as the “Nigerian Coast Guard.”
The arrests were made in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State following credible intelligence, according to the Commander of NNS Jubilee, Commodore Abubakar Umar, who briefed journalists at the naval base on Saturday.
Among those arrested were the self-proclaimed coordinator of the group and eight other members. Commodore Umar stated that the operation was carried out in line with the Federal Government’s Official Gazette of August 28, 2013, and in accordance with the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
“The Nigerian Constitution empowers the Navy to prevent the operations of illegal organizations within the maritime environment,” Umar said.
He added that the action aligns with directives from the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to secure Nigeria’s waterways and protect national economic interests.
The commander warned the public against falling prey to fraudulent organizations posing as legitimate maritime agencies and urged citizens to report suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
He also issued a strong warning to sea robbers, oil thieves, illegal bunkerers, and other criminal elements to desist from activities that sabotage the nation’s economy.
“The Nigerian Navy will not relent in tracking down, arresting, and prosecuting those who engage in criminal activities within our waters,” Umar declared.
