Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has said the presidency will return to Northern Nigeria after President Bola Tinubu completes his second term.
Zulum made the declaration on Sunday in Kaduna after attending a meeting with Northern women Ulama and Islamic scholars.
He said Northern political leaders had agreed to back Tinubu’s re-election as part of a broader understanding with their Southern counterparts on power rotation.
According to the governor, the arrangement is intended to preserve political stability, strengthen national unity and sustain peaceful relations between the North and South.
“About five years ago, we decided to ensure unity in Northern Nigeria, and we have achieved our objective,” Zulum said.
He maintained that the North had supported Tinubu’s emergence as President and should honour the understanding reached on the rotation of political power.
“We have negotiated with our Southern brothers and sisters and we have made a commitment. We should allow the South to complete its tenure and then we will decide our political future,” he said.
Zulum urged Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration and give it the opportunity to implement its policies aimed at addressing insecurity, poverty and other socio-economic challenges.
He said Northern leaders had recently held discussions on insecurity, the rising number of out-of-school children and poverty, adding that far-reaching decisions were taken to address the challenges.
The governor also urged the women Ulama to use their influence to promote peace and unity in their respective communities.
He said women had a major role to play in shaping the behaviour of children and maintaining peaceful communities.
“Women should be given the opportunity to nurture their children so they can live in peace,” he said.
Zulum appealed for patience in the face of the challenges confronting the country, saying Islamic teachings encouraged perseverance during difficult times.
“Whenever God tests us with a trial, patience is necessary before relief comes,” he added.
He cautioned against allowing political disagreements to undermine peaceful coexistence, recalling that Northern leaders had previously supported Southern candidates after benefiting from political power.
“I speak from the heart, not out of fear of anyone, but in the name of God,” Zulum said.
The governor expressed confidence that the political understanding between the regions would endure and urged Nigerians to work together to address areas requiring improvement.
He also called on the participants to replicate the Kaduna engagement across the northern states.
Zulum further stressed the political importance of women, saying they accounted for an estimated 60 to 65 per cent of votes cast in Borno State.
He urged them to deploy their influence towards promoting peace, unity and responsible political participation.
