The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has cautioned against the planned nationwide protests demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing the move as reckless, provocative, and a threat to national stability and the rule of law.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the CNG’s National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, said any attempt to pressure the government into freeing Kanu outside the judicial process would undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and embolden lawlessness.
“Releasing Nnamdi Kanu under mob pressure will not heal Nigeria; it will embolden lawlessness.
“No nation survives when treason is rewarded and justice is politicized,” Charanchi said.
He urged the Federal Government to allow Kanu’s trial to run its full course without political interference, insisting that justice must neither be delayed nor compromised.
The group also called on security agencies to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against any potential breakdown of law and order during the planned demonstrations.
It further demanded an investigation into individuals and groups allegedly funding or organizing the protests under the guise of human rights activism.
In a message to President Bola Tinubu, the CNG warned against political interference in the judicial process, urging him to uphold the principles of separation of powers and resist any form of coercion that could compromise justice.
The coalition appealed to Nigerians, particularly in the Southeast, to reject “calls to anarchy” and instead promote peace, dialogue, and development.
Reaffirming its stance, the group declared: “We stand firm in defense of the rule of law, national unity, and the memory of those who paid the ultimate price for peace.
“Nigeria must not bow to emotional blackmail.
“The law must take its course, for without justice, there can be no peace.”
