Governors of Nigeria’s Northwest region have declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Northwest Governors Forum and Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, the Forum expressed deep grief over the death of the elder statesman, describing him as a symbol of integrity and national service.
“The Northwest Governors Forum receives with great sorrow the news of the passing of our beloved former President, General Muhammadu Buhari, who died yesterday in the United Kingdom,” Radda stated.
He described Buhari as a “father, leader, and the pride of the Northwest,” noting that his life was defined by unwavering dedication to public service, integrity, and sacrifice.
As a mark of respect, the governors unanimously agreed to declare Tuesday a work-free day across the seven Northwestern states. “This gesture reflects the immense respect and appreciation we have for a man who gave his all to Nigeria,” Radda added.
According to the statement, Buhari’s remains will arrive in Katsina around noon on Tuesday, with the burial scheduled for 2:00 PM the same day.
Governor Radda urged Nigerians to offer prayers for the peaceful repose of the late president’s soul and extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the nation.
“May Allah (SWT) grant him Aljanah Firdaus and give his family and all Nigerians the strength to bear this great loss,” the statement concluded.
