The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has lifted the suspension on former Plateau United goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, allowing him to register with any club for the new season.
Adeyinka had been barred from club registration following allegations of involvement in illegal betting. His case was initially reviewed in a preliminary inquiry held last Thursday at the NPFL office in Abuja, where he appeared with his legal representative.
NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, said the inquiry commended the player for cooperating with the panel and providing information that has prompted a broader probe. “The investigation has now been elevated to a full inquiry, which will involve other players mentioned in the course of the review,” Owumi disclosed.
In a letter to Adeyinka, the NPFL explained that it would be unfair to jeopardize his career while the full investigation continues. “Your suspension has been lifted, and you are free to register with any club of your choice. We appreciate your cooperation,” the letter stated.
The betting allegations surfaced after Adeyinka reportedly turned down a contract with Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) over a clause prohibiting players from engaging in betting activities. His suspension was enforced pending the outcome of the investigation.
The NPFL has confirmed that findings from WhatsApp conversations and other independent sources will form part of the expanded probe, with several players expected to be invited for questioning.
