The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has officially ended its 50 per cent fare reduction on passenger train services, which ran nationwide during the yuletide period.
The discount concluded on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the NRC announced on Monday.
The corporation said the festive fare initiative saw high passenger patronage across all operational corridors, including the standard gauge routes of Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, Warri-Itakpe, and the narrow gauge Mass Transit Train (MTT) services.
Thousands of Nigerians reportedly took advantage of the discount to travel safely, comfortably, and affordably during the holiday season.
NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, praised the smooth operation of services throughout the period, highlighting orderly boarding, timely departures, and effective management of both online and onsite ticketing.
He also commended the professionalism of NRC staff and the support of security agencies and other stakeholders in ensuring passenger safety.
Passengers were said to have widely welcomed the fare reduction, which eased the financial burden of festive travel and promoted rail as a preferred mode of transport.
The NRC also acknowledged the media’s role in raising public awareness about the initiative.
With regular fares now resumed, the corporation reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery, expanding access to rail transportation, and supporting the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Unyimadu assured passengers of continued efforts to enhance efficiency, comfort, and safety on all train services nationwide.
