NRC, security agencies arrest suspects in nationwide crackdown on rail vandalism

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), in collaboration with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Railway Police Command, has intensified its crackdown on railway vandalism, leading to several arrests and the recovery of stolen materials across four states.

In Bauchi State, operatives of the NSCDC Mining Team intercepted a truck transporting vandalised railway steel sleepers in the Missu axis on June 20, 2025. Three suspects were arrested, and both the truck and materials were taken into custody for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, reaffirmed the agency’s firm stance against vandalism.

“This arrest underscores our zero-tolerance policy toward railway vandalism. We will not relent in pursuing individuals or criminal networks that threaten the safety and sustainability of Nigeria’s rail system,” he said.

In Kano State, four suspects—Mukhter Muhammed (30), Abdullahi Musa (21), Sa’idu Yushe’u (26), and Salisu Shuaibu (24)—are standing trial before Chief Magistrate Court No. 9 for conspiracy, mischief, and theft related to the vandalism of rail lines in Zakirai town, Gabasawa LGA. All four pleaded guilty, and judgment has been reserved until July 1, 2025.

In a separate operation in Gombe State, Railway Police officers intercepted a blue vehicle loaded with suspected stolen rail materials. Two suspects were arrested and are currently aiding the investigation.

Dr. Opeifa reiterated the NRC’s commitment to protecting national railway assets and warned that perpetrators would face the full weight of the law. He also called on the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities around railway infrastructure.

The operations highlight a renewed push by authorities to safeguard critical transport infrastructure amid rising incidents of rail vandalism in the country.
