The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a five-man syndicate accused of kidnapping, extortion, and theft along the Zaria–Kano expressway.
The suspects — Ibrahim Abubakar Garba, Umar Fulani, Aliyu Mohammed, Murtala Salisu, and Imrana Hassan — were apprehended following several complaints from victims in the area.
In a statement on Tuesday, NSCDC spokesperson CSC Babawale Afolabi said the arrest was made by the Corps’ Special Intelligence Squad after the gang reportedly stopped a journalist, Sani Ahmad, under the guise of warning him about danger ahead, before robbing him of cash and mobile phones.
The suspects have confessed to the crime, according to the NSCDC. Recovered items from them include six smartphones, ATM cards, wristwatches, and other personal belongings.
The Corps said investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be prosecuted upon completion.
Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, urged travellers to be vigilant, particularly during late-night trips, as the festive season approaches.
