NUPRC workers suspend strike

Employees of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) have called off the nationwide strike they began on Monday after reaching an agreement with the commission’s management.

The workers, under the umbrella of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, had embarked on an indefinite industrial action over the alleged failure to implement certain staff welfare packages.

The strike led to the temporary shutdown of the commission’s headquarters and disrupted administrative functions.

Confirming the development, NUPRC’s Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, said normal operations resumed after the unions suspended the strike late on June 1, 2026, following successful negotiations.

He explained that the industrial action lasted about 12 hours and only affected administrative activities, while core regulatory operations in the oil and gas sector continued without interruption.

Akinkuotu also dismissed reports suggesting that crude oil production was affected or that the dispute was linked to issues around foreign training, describing such claims as misleading.

He added that the commission has committed to improving staff welfare, enhancing the work environment, and prioritising employee development in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act.
