Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will support only candidates who back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections, regardless of their political party affiliations.

Wike made the statement on Saturday in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of Sandy Onor, describing his position as a matter of political duty and loyalty to the president.

“With the FCT Area Council election coming up, I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win. It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate not supporting him does not win, and I owe no apology for my stand,” he said.

The minister emphasized that his support would cut across party lines, insisting that backing the president’s second-term ambition remains his priority in the local government polls scheduled for February 21.

Speaking about the celebrant, Wike described Onor as a dependable ally and loyal friend, commending his contributions to academia and public service.

A citation read at the event highlighted Onor’s journey from the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate and politics in Cross River State, portraying him as a scholar and leader committed to national development.

Several dignitaries paid tribute to the senator, including former Benue State governor Samuel Ortom, ex-Abia governor Okezie Ikpeazu, and former Attorney General of the Federation Kanu Agabi, who praised Onor’s character, leadership, and intellectual contributions.

The event also featured the unveiling of a Festschrift in Onor’s honour, supported by donations from friends and associates.

In his remarks, Onor thanked family, friends, and supporters for celebrating his life and urged Nigerians to uphold excellence, integrity, and faith in their pursuits.
