The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied approving or agreeing to any levy reportedly being collected by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) from students in connection with corps mobilisation.

The clarification followed a viral report alleging that NANS planned to collect a N200 levy from Nigerian students as part of arrangements for NYSC mobilisation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, said the scheme had no connection with the corps.

She said the NYSC had never discussed, approved or entered into any agreement with NANS for the collection of money from students for mobilisation.

“The NYSC wishes to state unequivocally that it has not, at any time, discussed, agreed to, or entered into any Memorandum of Understanding with NANS regarding the collection of any levy from students,” Embu said.

According to her, NYSC mobilisation is conducted through official channels involving the scheme’s management and Heads of Corps Producing Institutions.

She explained that tertiary institutions are responsible for submitting the required details of eligible graduates to facilitate their mobilisation for national service.

Embu stressed that participation in NYSC mobilisation does not depend on membership of, or payment to, any student association.

“The mobilisation process is neither linked to nor contingent upon the activities of any student association or organisation,” she said.

The NYSC therefore advised students and prospective corps members to disregard claims that they are required to pay a levy to NANS or any other organisation to be mobilised for national service.

The agency said it remained committed to ensuring that the mobilisation process is transparent, credible and conducted in accordance with approved government policies and guidelines.
