Obi: 2023 presidential election, worst in Nigeria

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has described the February 25, 2023, presidential poll as the worst election in Nigeria.

Obi said the conduct of the 2023 presidential election has downgraded the country, adding that the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit election results from the polling units to the commission’s servers was devastating.

The two-term former governor of Anambra State said this while speaking on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily, on Thursday.

The LP presidential flag-bearer lamented that the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections were below expectations despite the huge amount budgeted for the polls.

“We have seen probably what I consider the worst election in our recent history because of the 2022 Electoral Act which gave so much hope and the huge expenditure we put into technology.

“Do you know what it means to spend over $1bn? So, there was so much that was promised and then we went back to what it used to be. For me, that is very devastating.

“Whenever there is an election announced globally, what it does is that it uplifts the ratings of that society,” Obi stated.

The former governor, who has since challenged the declaration of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the just concluded presidential election, further stated that he is confident in the judiciary to deliver the right judgement.

Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat Obi and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, in the election.

Atiku came second with 6,984,520 votes, while Obi garnered 6,101,533 votes to occupy the third position.
