Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a five-year single tenure for Nigeria’s president, scrapping the current two-term system.
Speaking in Bauchi on Friday during a courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed, Obi argued that the arrangement would prevent leaders from spending valuable time pursuing re-election bids.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it here: there should be no second tenure for president.
“It should be five years straight, like in South Korea, so leaders can focus entirely on delivering results,” Obi stated.
The 2027 presidential hopeful pledged that if elected, he would serve only one term and not extend his stay in office by a single day beyond four years.
He also vowed to strengthen political parties, making them more influential than individual officeholders.
“I want the party to be bigger than the president or governors so we can have orderliness,” he said.
In response, Governor Mohammed urged Obi to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as his political home.
“We want you back in the PDP.
“Politics in Nigeria cannot be driven by ego or personal interest; we must work together in the interest of Nigerians,” Mohammed remarked.
