The national leadership of the Labour Party including the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, has announced the removal of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the LP.
This was announced at a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
According to the LP, the meeting was aimed at ending the crisis in the party since the controversial National Convention which was held in a hotel room in Nnewi, Anambra State, by Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC).
After exhaustive deliberations on how to move the LP forward, former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, was appointed to head an interim NWC with a 90-day mandate to organise congresses at all levels of the party, including a national convention to elect substantive officers of the party.

In her acceptance speech, Usman promised to work with her team for the unity and growth of the party.
The meeting was attended by the LP vice presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed, Abia State Deputy Governor, and all LP lawmakers at the national and state levels, as well as gubernatorial candidates of the party in the 2023 general election.
