Nigeria have announced a 24-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-offs in Morocco, with goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and winger Chidera Ejuke making notable returns.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) unveiled the list on Saturday ahead of the semi-final clash against Gabon on November 13 at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
The winner will face either Cameroon or DR Congo three days later for a spot in the inter-confederation play-offs.
Okoye, who has reclaimed the No.1 spot at Udinese, returns to the national team for the first time since June after a run of strong Serie A performances, including a standout display against Atalanta.
His recall follows growing concerns over Stanley Nwabali’s recent form.
In defence, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Chidozie Awaziem, and Semi Ajayi all feature. Osayi-Samuel returns from injury, while Ajayi — suspended for the Gabon game — keeps his place for the final, should Nigeria advance.
Captain William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey also retain their spots.
The midfield remains anchored by Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, and Alhassan Yusuf, with Raphael Onyedika returning after a hamstring layoff.
Onyedika’s form for Club Brugge, including a standout display against Barcelona, has reinforced his claim for a starting role.
Ejuke, back in the fold after three years, has impressed for Sevilla this season.
His pace and creativity are expected to boost an attack led by Victor Osimhen, supported by Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Tolu Arokodare, Akor Adams, and Olusegun Olakunle.
Notably, Paul Onuachu and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro were omitted.
Onuachu’s exclusion — despite scoring seven league goals and winning Turkey’s Player of the Month for October — surprised many fans.
Nigeria, seeking their first World Cup appearance since 2018, must navigate the Rabat play-offs, where four teams — Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo — will battle from November 13 to 16 for a single ticket to the inter-confederation play-offs and, ultimately, the 2026 World Cup in North America.
