One dead, three injured as gunman opens fire at Kano wedding

A wedding celebration in Kano State turned deadly after a man allegedly fired a pump-action gun at guests, leaving one person dead and three others injured.

The incident occurred on August 16 at Tudun Yola during a marriage ceremony commonly referred to as a “DJ” event, according to the Kano State Police Command.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, said 34-year-old Rabiu Mukhtar had been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Haruna-Kiyawa said four people were hit by the gunfire and taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano for treatment. One of the victims, identified as Aliyu Mustapha, later died from his injuries, while the other three were still receiving medical attention.

Police said the firearm allegedly used in the attack was recovered from the suspect.

Mukhtar and another individual were reportedly taken into custody at the Command headquarters in Bompai as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The police spokesman said preliminary findings indicated that the incident followed disagreement over music being played at the ceremony.

He added that the suspect told investigators he opened fire after receiving information that members of a suspected gang, known locally as ‘Yan Daba, were heading towards the venue.

The Command said investigation into the incident was ongoing and that those found culpable would face prosecution after the conclusion of the inquiry.
