One killed, vehicles razed as petrol-laden tanker explodes in Lagos

A petrol-laden tanker, on Friday, crashed and exploded at Ajegunle bus stop, Alagbado on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

It was gathered that the tanker exploded at about 2:06 a.m. on Friday, causing panic in the area.

The incident was confirmed by the South-West Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye.

Farinloye stated that one person was killed in the crash of the tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of petrol.

He disclosed that a male adult was recovered dead.

“Assessment on impacts of the incident is ongoing,” he stated.

Farinloye added that the petrol-laden tanker spilled its content down to the Tollgate end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

According to him, the Lagos State Fire Service handled it from the Lagos end, while Ogun State Fire Service intervened from the Ogun end.

The inferno was also confirmed by the Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Margret Adeseye, noting that three vehicles were burnt.

Adeseye added that the fire incident was brought under control by the Agege, Ikeja, and Alausa Fire crew of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service with the use of tactical firefighting application of chemical foam compound to suppress the fire

“The public is hereby assured that the situation is under control as the process of mopping up and evacuation of the remains of the fire is ongoing. They should however exercise caution and restraint as outbound Lagos traffic has been diverted to travel with the inbound vehicular traffic.

“Unfortunately, a male adult was recovered suspected dead likewise three various brands of vehicles involved in the fire aside the tanker and shops,” she stated.
