A one-way SUV driver has absconded after colliding with a tricycle operator, resulting in the tricyclist’s death in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident via a statement issued by its spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo, on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

Adebayo quoted the LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, as stating the crash occurred at Origan, Oko-Afo, along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.

The crash involved a commercial tricycle and a Mercedes-Benz.

The LASTMA boss said preliminary findings revealed that the SUV driver was travelling in the wrong direction — commonly known as “one-way” — from Ile-Epo towards Oko-Afo, flouting traffic rules.

Bakare-Oki disclosed that the violation led to a head-on collision with the oncoming tricycle, resulting in fatal injuries to the tricyclist.

He said the tricyclist sustained multiple traumatic injuries, including a critical knee dislocation, and was confirmed dead at the scene.

Bakare-Oki stated: “In a shocking act of cowardice and moral negligence, the SUV driver fled the scene immediately, abandoning both his vehicle and the lifeless body of his victim.

“LASTMA operatives arrived swiftly at the location, demonstrating professionalism in securing the scene and escalating the matter to the Morogbo Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Officers from the division promptly took control of the area, while personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), also present, conveyed the deceased’s remains to the mortuary at the General Hospital in Badagry for formal processing.”

Bakare-Oki condemned the incident, calling the driver’s conduct a grave threat to public safety and a breach of transport laws.

The LASTMA boss also urged motorists to act responsibly, noting that one life lost is a tragedy too many.
