The Manager of Onitsha River Port, Mr. Martins Osazuwa, says the facility has the potential to generate at least N10 billion annually if run at full capacity.
Speaking in Onitsha on Friday, Osazuwa announced the arrival of a barge loaded with tiles from Ajaokuta, Kogi State — the port’s first in 2025 — describing it as a milestone that other companies should emulate to cut transportation costs.
He identified major challenges hindering the port’s operations, including insecurity, low patronage, militant youth activities, piracy, and delays in dredging the River Niger.
Osazuwa urged the federal and state governments to dredge the port and provide incentives to attract more users, stressing that full operations could ease road congestion, reduce pressure on Lagos ports, and boost regional trade.
Describing the port as the “golden egg” of the eastern region, he projected that with maximum utilisation, it could even generate up to N100 billion yearly.
