Only 21 of Nigeria’s 36 states generated and reported revenue from their local government areas in 2025, with the combined figure standing at N65.82bn, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
The data, published by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, showed that Lagos State recorded the highest revenue from its local governments, generating N16.30bn during the year.
Jigawa followed with N10.04bn, while Gombe generated N8.92bn to rank third.
Kebbi recorded N4.94bn, followed by Kwara and Ondo with N3.43bn each.
Other states that generated revenue from their local governments were Kogi, N3.12bn; Bauchi, N2.52bn; Ogun, N2.07bn; Edo, N2.05bn; Katsina, N1.80bn; and Taraba, N1.70bn.
Cross River generated N1.45bn, while Niger recorded N1.05bn.
The remaining states in the data were Enugu, N786.08m; Borno, N666.55m; Ekiti, N608.77m; Imo, N521.84m; Kaduna, N393.46m; Sokoto, N10.05m; and Ebonyi, N1.09m.
The figures show a wide disparity in reported revenue generated from local government areas across the states, with Lagos alone accounting for about a quarter of the N65.82bn combined figure.
Sokoto and Ebonyi recorded the lowest figures, generating N10.05m and N1.09m respectively.
