Osun sues IG, CP over Fadahunsi’s alleged killing threat

The Osun State Government has approached the High Court seeking an order compelling the Inspector-General of Police and the state Commissioner of Police to investigate Senator Francis Fadahunsi over alleged inciting comments ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The suit, marked HOS/M.157/26, was filed on August 12, 2026, by the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, at the High Court of Justice, Osogbo Judicial Division.

Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, was joined in the suit as a person affected or interested in the matter.

The legal action followed the circulation of a video purportedly showing the senator making comments about members of the Accord Party during political activities ahead of the August 15 election.

The state alleged that Fadahunsi, in the video, called on members of the All Progressives Congress to “kill Accord Party members anywhere they see them.”

The government further alleged that the senator extended the alleged threat to the relatives of Accord members, including their wives and children.

According to the court documents, the senator was also alleged to have called for Accord members to be driven from hotels and described them as “not normal human beings” because of their yellow caps.

The Osun Government urged the court to compel the police to obtain, preserve and forensically examine the complete and unedited version of the video to establish its authenticity and context.

It also wants the police to investigate when and where the video was recorded, the audience present, its sponsors and publishers, as well as other individuals connected with its production and circulation.

The government argued that the alleged remarks, if authenticated, could pose a serious threat to public safety and electoral peace given their timing ahead of the governorship election.

It said the comments were capable of generating fear, encouraging political violence, threatening lives and destabilising public order.

The state is also asking the court to direct the police to take preventive measures to protect Accord Party members, candidates, supporters, agents, voters and other residents who may be at risk.

It further wants the police to invite, question, interrogate or arrest any person where the investigation establishes sufficient legal grounds and to commence appropriate criminal proceedings against anyone found culpable, irrespective of political position or affiliation.

The government also asked the court to bar anyone acting on the alleged remarks from intimidating, threatening, attacking or harassing Accord members or interfering with voters’ right to participate freely in the election.

It wants the police to submit a report on the steps taken within 48 hours of the court’s order or within any other period determined by the court.

Arguing the urgency of the application, the state said the proximity of the election required citizens to be able to participate without fear of violence or intimidation.

It maintained that political affiliation, choice of candidate, clothing or party symbols should not expose citizens to threats or attacks.

The government also stressed that elected officials were not exempt from criminal law.

“No holder of political office, irrespective of status, party affiliation, elective office, or membership of the National Assembly, is above the criminal law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” it stated.

The state urged the court to grant the application in the interest of public safety, electoral peace, public order and the rule of law.

Fadahunsi had earlier been invited by the police over the alleged comments. He reported at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday, where he was questioned for several hours before being released.

The development comes less than 48 hours before the August 15 Osun governorship election, with security and political tensions heightened ahead of the poll.
