Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde
The Oyo State Government has launched a new initiative aimed at tackling open defecation through the construction of public toilet facilities in major markets across the state.
The project, being implemented by the state’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, began with the construction of a public toilet at Ojoo Market in Ibadan.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, and made available to journalists in Ibadan.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Saturday, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said the initiative forms part of the state government’s efforts to improve sanitation, safeguard public health, and eliminate open defecation.
According to him, the programme aligns with the sanitation goals of UNICEF and the Oyo State Government’s broader environmental agenda.
Aderinto noted that the state aims to completely end open defecation by 2031 and urged residents and visitors to support the government’s efforts in achieving the target.
“The provision of public toilet facilities in busy locations such as markets is a strategic step toward eliminating open defecation and protecting environmental and public health,” he said.
He added that the government remains committed to expanding sanitation infrastructure and implementing policies that will ensure cleaner public spaces and a healthier environment for residents.
The commissioner also commended Open Public Spaces for supporting the project and contributing to efforts aimed at improving sanitation across the state.
Aderinto further urged traders and visitors at Ojoo Market to make proper use of the facility and cooperate with the government in maintaining hygienic sanitation practices.
The project is being executed by the management of Open Public Spaces, led by Abdulateef Abdulganiyu, and is expected to provide traders, residents, and visitors with a convenient and hygienic alternative to indiscriminate sanitation practices.
