Patience Jonathan bags PhD, urges women, youths to pursue education

Former First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, has received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, encouraging Nigerians—especially women and youth—to pursue their academic dreams regardless of age.

Speaking during the 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony of the university, Dr. Jonathan emphasized that quality education is vital to building a better society.

She urged individuals not to see age as a barrier to academic achievement.

“I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old.

“If I can do it, you can also do it,” she said.

“Even in retirement, you are not too old to go back to school because education provides the opportunity to refresh the brain and learn new things.”

The former First Lady dedicated her academic achievement to Nigerian women, reaffirming her commitment to championing the rights of vulnerable groups in society, particularly women, children, and youths.

She pledged to use her platform to promote dialogue and social development.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Jonathan expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged the unwavering support of her family throughout her academic pursuit.

“I am very grateful to the Almighty God who has made today a reality.

“I also thank my family sincerely, especially my lovely husband, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, for all his support and useful suggestions.

“I appreciate my beautiful and lovely children for their understanding and love during this period,” she said.

Her Media Adviser, Chris Okeke, released the statement following the convocation ceremony, where dignitaries, scholars, and guests gathered to celebrate the milestone.

Dame Patience Jonathan served as Nigeria’s First Lady from 2010 to 2015.

With this new academic accomplishment, she joins the ranks of Nigerians who have pursued lifelong learning and higher education in their later years, reinforcing the message that it is never too late to learn.
