The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a weak and disorganized platform, insisting that the PDP remains Nigeria’s leading opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the PDP Founding Fathers and Stakeholders Conference in Abuja on Wednesday, BoT Secretary Senator Ahmed Makarfi maintained that any credible opposition coalition must be led by the PDP.
“What we are against is a coalition that cannot work,” Makarfi said. “PDP is the leading opposition party, and any such alliance must fall under our leadership. That’s what Nigerians expect and what makes the difference.”
He mocked recent efforts by some politicians to adopt the ADC as their 2027 platform, describing the move as a “legal and structural mess.” Makarfi revealed he had obtained certified documents from his state showing the current ADC executive’s tenure runs until May 2026 — casting doubt on the legitimacy of any parallel leadership.
“If someone claims to offer you structure, you must ask: which structure? People are walking into a legal trap,” he warned.
The former Kaduna governor also expressed confidence that recent PDP defectors would return once the party successfully conducts its national convention and elects new national officers.
“They are our friends; they will come back,” he said. “Our only internal issue was with the office of the national secretary, and we’re addressing it. But the ADC’s crisis affects its entire national structure.”
Makarfi emphasized that while the PDP is open to coalition talks, such efforts must acknowledge the PDP’s role as the anchor of any opposition front.
“Not only will the majority of those who left return, but we will also attract members from other parties,” he concluded.
