The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on its members to end internal legal battles and focus on reconciliation and party consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appeal was made on Wednesday during the 86th meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), chaired by Mao Ohuabunwa.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Abdulrahman Mohammed, said recent court rulings should mark a turning point for the party, urging members to embrace unity and respect the rule of law.
“The court has spoken once again that the rule of law must prevail in our party’s internal affairs. I want to call on all party stakeholders and leaders to unite for the betterment of our party. Enough of litigations that will delay our activities towards the 2027 general election,” he said.
The BoT meeting served as a platform for the party leadership to outline key activities in the coming weeks, including the conduct of state congresses and preparations for the party’s National Convention.
In his remarks, Ohuabunwa described the gathering as a “defining moment” for the PDP, urging members to approach party affairs with wisdom and calm reflection.
“This gathering comes at a defining moment in the life of the PDP; one that calls not for emotion or haste, but for wisdom, institutional memory, and calm reflection,” he said.
He noted that the party had recently achieved milestones in its internal reorganisation, citing the successful conduct of ward and local government congresses across the country.
According to him, the congresses were largely peaceful and transparent, reflecting the party’s commitment to grassroots democracy.
Ohuabunwa expressed optimism that the state congresses scheduled for the weekend would further strengthen party structures nationwide.
“These congresses are not merely administrative exercises; they are critical steps in renewing the legitimacy, inclusiveness, and vitality of our great party,” he said.
He also revealed that preparations were underway for the party’s National Convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, which he said would help reposition the party and reaffirm its commitment to unity and democratic principles.
The BoT chairman further acknowledged recent judgments of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria affirming the legality and authority of the National Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.
He said the rulings had brought clarity and stability within the party, adding that the PDP would continue to respect the decisions of the courts and operate in line with the rule of law and its constitution.
