PDP leadership: INEC rejects Turaki-led NWC, cites valid court judgements

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restated its decision not to recognise the leadership outcomes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention reportedly held on 15–16 November 2025, citing subsisting court judgments and ongoing legal processes.

In a letter dated 22 December 2025 and signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC confirmed receiving several correspondences from lawyers representing the PDP, requesting the Commission to recognise and upload on its website the list of National Officers said to have emerged from the convention.

INEC said it carefully reviewed the requests in line with relevant facts, applicable laws and binding judicial decisions directly connected to the issue.

The Commission noted that its position was guided by existing final judgments of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, as well as pending cases touching on the party’s leadership dispute.

According to INEC, the presence of valid court rulings and unresolved legal processes makes it impossible for the Commission to accede to the request to recognise or update any leadership list arising from the disputed convention at this time.

The electoral body emphasised that it remains bound by the rule of law and can only act in accordance with clear court directives.

It added that any change in its position would depend on the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings or the emergence of fresh, unambiguous court orders.

INEC reassured the public of its commitment to neutrality, due process and strict adherence to the Constitution and the Electoral Act in all matters relating to political parties and their internal affairs.

Saminu Turaki was elected National Chairman at the convention held in Ibadan.
