Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has explained that air travel disruptions prevented him from attending the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday after visiting the late president’s family, Obi said flight operations were halted on Tuesday to accommodate dignitaries arriving for the funeral, making it impossible for him to travel that day.
“There were no available flights, and even if you had one, landing at Katsina Airport was impossible due to its closure for official movements,” Obi explained.
Despite missing the burial, Obi said his condolence visit fell within the mourning period and emphasized that honouring the deceased goes beyond being present at the funeral.
“Mourning continues beyond the burial day, and paying respect today or tomorrow still reflects our shared grief and honour,” he said.
Obi described his decision to make the trip as a gesture of respect for Buhari, recounting a personal interaction they had during his presidential campaign.
“I met him while campaigning, and he told me, ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That message stayed with me,” Obi recalled.
“I believe he did his best within his ability and had a genuine concern for the poor.”
Reflecting on the former president’s death, Obi said it underscores the need for leaders to serve with humility and purpose.
“His passing reminds us that no matter our position, we all return to our creator. We must lead with that awareness,” he said.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died in London on Sunday and was buried with full military honours at his residence in Daura on Tuesday.
