Petrol souvenirs: Lagos seals off event centre

For allowing organisers of a social gathering to use its venue to distribute kegs of petrol as souvenirs to guests, the Lagos State Government has sealed off Havilah Events Centre.

The Lagos State Safety Commission in conjunction with the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) sealed the event centre located in Victoria Island on Saturday.

Two officials of the centre were arrested while Lagos Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi has directed that all those involved be arrested.

The arrest was on the directive of the Lagos State Government that the centre be sealed and all parties involved arrested.

Lagos State Government had earlier vowed to punish the organisers of the party that distributed kegs of petrol as souvenirs to guests.

The state government stated that the “action is dangerous and against all safety measures.”

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, in a statement on Saturday, stated that the state government is probing the action.

The commissioner said the action can lead to loss of lives and property.

Omotoso said: “The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to a video showing kegs of petrol being handed out as souvenirs at an Event Centre in Lagos. The video has gone viral on social media.

“There is no doubt that this action is dangerous and can lead to loss of lives and property. It is blatantly against all safety measures in such places.

“The Lagos State Government, through the Safety Commission, is investigating this matter and will ensure that all parties to this reprehensible action are made to account for it.

“The safety of lives and property of Lagosians and visitors remain a top priority to the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration. We, therefore, advise that actions that can lead to loss of lives and property be avoided.”
