The Jos North Local Government Council in Plateau State has ordered the immediate closure of a private school in Sabon Layi community after inspections revealed serious structural defects.
The chairman of Jos North, Barr. John Christopher, issued the closure following an inspection led by his deputy, Hon. Sani Muhammad Garkuwa, which found that the school failed to meet approved building-plan standards.
A statement from Mercy Kachollom Chuwang, the chairman’s chief press secretary, said cracks were observed in beams and walls, posing significant safety risks to students. Some structures showed signs of compromised integrity that could trigger a sudden collapse under daily use or during examinations.
The statement also indicated that substandard materials may have been used in construction. In addition, a discrepancy in the school’s name raised credibility concerns: while the signboard reads Victory High Science School, students’ uniforms bear the name Abu Sinan High School.
Other deficiencies noted include poor cross-ventilation, inadequate doors, windows, and toilet facilities, creating an unsafe learning environment.
“We are directing the school authorities to cease all operations and send the students home. This action is to ensure that schools remain safe and conducive for learning and to prevent any building collapse that could lead to loss of lives,” the statement said.
The council warned all school owners in Jos North to strictly adhere to building specifications, adding that further inspections will be conducted and any substandard schools will be closed to safeguard students and staff.
