Plateau police debunk bomb threat rumours, assure public of safety

The Plateau State Police Command has dismissed widespread rumours of an alleged bomb threat targeting the University of Jos (UniJos) and other parts of Jos metropolis, describing the claims as unverified and lacking credible evidence.

The rumours, which spread rapidly on social media, followed the circulation of a memo purportedly issued by the university’s security division and signed by the Acting Chief Security Officer. The memo, dated July 4, 2025, warned of a possible bombing incident within the university community.

In response, Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Adesina, reassured the public that no credible intelligence supports the alleged threat. However, he stressed that the police are taking the situation seriously and have put proactive measures in place to ensure public safety.

To that effect, CP Adesina ordered the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit to thoroughly inspect the UniJos campus and other sensitive locations within Jos. He also directed specialised patrol teams, bomb technicians, and officers from the State Intelligence Department (SID) to secure key areas and maintain heightened surveillance across the city.

Police spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, in a statement, urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, advising them to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest security agency.

“We want to assure the good people of Plateau that there is no cause for alarm. While we treat all threats seriously, this particular one remains unverified. Our officers are fully deployed and alert,” CP Adesina said.

He also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information capable of inciting fear or disturbing public order, reaffirming the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all residents.
