Police arrest 14 over fake currency, arms in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 14 suspects allegedly involved in the production and circulation of fake currencies in the state.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the arrests in a statement released Friday in Dutse, the state capital.

He said the suspects were apprehended during a coordinated, intelligence-driven raid in Digawa village, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.

The operation, carried out by a joint team of security operatives in the early hours of Thursday, followed credible intelligence about the activities of a criminal syndicate involved in fraudulent practices and other illicit acts.

“Fourteen male suspects were arrested during the operation, and several incriminating items were recovered from the scene,” Shiisu stated.

Recovered items included nine fabricated pistols, seven dane guns, four motorcycles, 12 pieces of counterfeit U.S. dollars, 188 pieces of suspected fake Central African currency, charms, as well as a bow and arrow.

Shiisu also revealed that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing a thorough investigation. He noted that they will be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.

He emphasized the commitment of the police to protecting communities and eliminating criminal elements from the state, urging the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.

The police spokesman further disclosed that members of the syndicate had earlier attacked Dumus village on Wednesday after residents reportedly refused to support their illegal activities.

The attack resulted in the death of one villager, identified as Isma’il Ibrahim, while eight others sustained injuries.
