Police arrest 1,412 suspects, recover 4,405 arms, ammunition

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has declared that its operatives arrested no fewer than 1,412 suspects and recovered 350 arms and 4,055 ammunition across the country in the past two months.

The NPF disclosed that 548 suspects were arrested for armed robbery, 242 suspects for kidnapping, 365 suspects for murder/homicide, and 237 suspects for rape/defilement.

It added that 113 kidnap suspects were rescued unhurt and reunited with their families in two months.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made the disclosure while parading some of the arrested suspects at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Adejobi said a 32-year-old plumber, Yusuf Ismael Isah, from Okene in Kogi State, was arrested by police operatives for an attack on the convoy of the Founder of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide, Apostle Johnson Suleiman, along Benin–Auchi road on October 21, 2022.

He stated that Isah was part of the seven-man gang that launched the attack on the convoy of Apostle Suleiman, where six people, including 3 police officers, were killed.

The police spokesman listed the exhibits recovered from the suspect upon his arrest in Ondo State to include five AK47 rifles, two K2 assault rifles, 180 rounds of live ammunition, four suspected locally made IEDs, one pistol, and found rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Adejobi added that four suspects were neutralised following a gun duel with police operatives on Friday, July 7, 2023, saying one AK47 with 19 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and two Molotov cocktails were recovered from the gunmen who were enforcing a sit-at-home order in Enugu State.

He, however, quoted the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, as reiterating the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to continually ensure the safety and security of the citizens.

Egbetokun stressed that his administration will leave no stone unturned in the effort to suppress and decimate criminality and the heinous activities of non-state actors who cause pain, hardship, and sorrows to innocent law-abiding Nigerians.
