The Yobe State Police Command has arrested 26 men for alleged illegal tree felling and activities linked to desertification in Garaji village, Tarmuwa Local Government Area.

Security sources said the suspects, all residents of Damaturu LGA, reportedly entered the bush on February 2, 2026, and cut down a large number of trees without authorisation from local authorities, in violation of state environmental protection laws.

Acting on a complaint from Habu Mandadawa, Supervisor of the Tarmuwa Agricultural Department, police officers, supported by local vigilantes, raided the area and apprehended the suspects. Large quantities of firewood were recovered at the scene.

Police said the activity poses serious environmental risks, including land degradation and the spread of desert encroachment across the state.

The suspects are under investigation, while the command urged residents to report illegal logging and other forms of environmental destruction to help protect natural resources.
