The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man, Sahabi Rabi’u, in connection with the alleged killing of a nursing mother and her 10-month-old baby in Sheme village, Faskari Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement on Saturday, the police spokesperson, Abubakar Aliyu, said the suspect confessed to carrying out the crime with the help of an accomplice who is currently at large.
According to the police, Rabi’u allegedly lured the 30-year-old woman and her infant to the outskirts of Sheme village, where they were murdered.
The suspect reportedly burned their bodies and dumped the remains in a well.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the killings were triggered by a dispute over the paternity of the child.
The bodies of the victims have since been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing accomplice.
The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, described the incident as “barbaric and inhumane,” and urged members of the public to provide credible information that could aid in the arrest of the second suspect.
He assured residents that any information shared would be treated with strict confidentiality.
