Police arrest newlywed woman over husband’s death in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who died after eating a meal prepared by her in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.

The incident reportedly occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. The deceased was said to have eaten lunch at home before he suddenly became seriously ill.

Confirming the development in a statement issued in Dutse on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the man was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment but was pronounced dead while receiving care.

Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation and arrested the deceased’s wife as the principal suspect.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspect confessed during interrogation that she poisoned her husband’s food with rat poison. She also reportedly told investigators that she sent her cousin to purchase the substance used.

SP Adam said the suspect claimed she was forced into the marriage by her parents, which she alleged influenced her actions.

The Commissioner of Police, he added, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough investigation.

He said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Meanwhile, the police command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, advising against taking the law into one’s hands.

The command also encouraged residents to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving family and marital disputes, warning that unlawful actions often lead to irreversible consequences.

The police assured the public of their commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across Jigawa State, noting that the suspect remains in custody pending prosecution.
