Police arrest serial phone thief in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested one Yusuf Abdurrahman for conniving and stealing passengers’ phones on tricycle in the Rimin Kebe area of the state.

The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Kiyawa, who made the disclosure to newsmen on Wednesday, said the suspect was arrested along State Road after a victim raised alarm that triggered KARATO officers, police and passersby into action, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Kano has been facing cases of phone theft and phone snatching lately with the assailants using tricycles while in some cases the victims were injured or even killed in rare occasions.

The police spokesperson noted that the suspect who was once prosecuted and convicted for phone theft confessed that they were two in the tricycle but the rider escaped.

“We usually carry passengers and when we start moving, we’ll tell them we are no longer going where they want. Before they come down, we’ll be moving fast and pressing brake, so it’s through that we remove their phones,” the police quoted the suspect as saying.

Kiyawa added that four Android mobile phones were recovered and handed to the owners after confirming their genuine ownership.

The police spokesperson, therefore, noted that the suspect would be prosecuted soon.
