Police arrest suspect over importation, distribution of fake engine oil

The Zone 2 Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly producing and distributing adulterated engine oil across the country.

The command’s spokesperson, Gbenga Afolayan, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Lagos, noting that the arrest followed a petition submitted to the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, over the illegal adulteration of engine oil products.

According to him, the petition was referred to the Zonal Anti-Piracy Unit, which launched a discreet investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest.

Investigators said the suspect confessed to coordinating the production and importation of fake engine oil from China before distributing the products to several states nationwide.

During intelligence-led raids, detectives recovered 280 gallons of adulterated engine oil from locations across Imo State, Enugu State, Kano State, Lagos State and Ogun State.

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria later tested the seized products and confirmed they did not meet Nigerian Industrial Standards.

Fayoade reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting consumers, supporting legitimate businesses and ensuring offenders involved in economic crimes are brought to justice.

The police urged residents to report related complaints through its hotlines, social media platforms or official email channels.
