The Osun State Police Command has arrested two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service over a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a driver in Osogbo.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to him, the Customs officers were apprehended following the incident which occurred in the Dada Estate area of the city earlier in the day.
Ojelabi explained that the officers were reportedly pursuing suspected tokunbo (foreign-used) vehicles when the shooting happened.
“Meanwhile, the driver of the ash-coloured Toyota Corolla, one of the vehicles being chased by the Customs officers, was shot and later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital,” he said.
The police spokesperson added that the body of the yet-to-be-identified victim has been deposited in a morgue.
Items recovered from the scene include a Beretta pistol with breech number 125024, 11 rounds of 9mm live ammunition, and one expanded 9mm shell.
Also recovered were two vehicles — a white Toyota Corolla with Lagos registration number AAA 400 GQ and an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number GFQ 0982.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
He assured the public that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The police also urged residents to remain calm and continue to support security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
