Police ban unauthorised political rallies in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has announced a ban on all unauthorised political rallies and gatherings across the state, citing security concerns and ongoing restrictions on political activities.

In a statement released on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, the police said they received credible intelligence about a planned political rally by supporters of former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to celebrate his birthday.

While acknowledging the public’s right to association and celebration, the command emphasized that political rallies remain suspended until the official start of campaign activities as set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The command has credible information suggesting that criminal elements are planning to infiltrate and hijack the proposed rally, using it to incite violence and disrupt public peace,” Hassan stated.

He added that the proposed event coincides with party primaries for the upcoming bye-election in the state, which have been officially scheduled and communicated to the police in line with proper procedures.

According to him, the rally could disrupt areas designated for the primaries and potentially lead to clashes and public disorder.

“In light of these developments, we strongly advise the organisers of the Peter Obi rally to suspend any form of gathering or procession,” the spokesperson warned.

“Any event in honour of their principal should be postponed to maintain public safety and avoid hijack by miscreants.”

Hassan reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and warned that any violation of the directive would attract legal action.

He also called on the public to continue supporting efforts to maintain peace and security in Kaduna State.
