The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has identified and detained officers accused of allegedly extorting N40,000 from a resident along the Wuye-Utako Road in Abuja.
The officers were identified after a video alleging the extortion was circulated on social media.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Adeh said the video showed a resident alleging that a police officer collected N40,000 from him on August 20, 2026, despite confirming that his documents were complete.
The complainant reportedly shared a receipt and footage of a conversation he had with the officers after returning to the checkpoint.
“The officers depicted in the video have been identified and are in custody,” Adeh said.
She added that the command had invited the complainant to its headquarters to formally document his account and assist investigators in establishing what transpired.
According to the police, the investigation will determine whether the officers committed any offence and guide subsequent disciplinary action.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said the command would not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority or other forms of misconduct by its personnel.
He warned that officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary and legal measures in line with existing laws and police regulations.
The command also urged residents to report cases of police misconduct and provide evidence that could assist investigations.
The latest allegation comes amid recurring complaints of extortion and abuse of authority at police checkpoints across Abuja.
In June 2026, Sanusi warned police officers against extorting commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators, saying personnel found engaging in such acts would be treated as criminals.
Similarly, in July, the command detained four officers and ordered their orderly room trial after they were accused of abandoning their posts, operating an unauthorised checkpoint and allegedly collecting about N52,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Musa Aliyu, SAN.
The latest case adds to calls for stronger enforcement of disciplinary measures against officers accused of abusing their authority in the FCT.
